Read to dogs

OUR MISSION

Currently the United States is in a literary crisis for both children and adults. The Education Trust states: Last year, the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), “the nation’s report card,” showed that not even half (43%) of fourth graders in the U.S. scored at or above a proficient level in reading. With a ‘Read to Dogs’ book we feel that it will not only help with literacy, but it will make a huge difference in helping children develop a love of reading. (Not to mention that 48 million adults do not read beyond a 3rd grade level.)

It starts with the simple fact that children are not intimidated while reading to dogs, as they are when in front of their peers, teachers, and parents. In fact, we see ‘Read to Dogs’ happening already at the humane society, where children purposely visit to read to the dogs. We are also seeing it happen in public libraries across the country - from Traverse City, Michigan to Bellevue, Washington and everywhere in between. Service dogs are brought in, and the children can come in and read to the dogs. It allows the children to read with no judgement, anxiety, or fear. In fact, this program has been so successful nationally that appointment times are now usually required.

Reading to dogs has also been brought into schools, for children who not only struggle with reading but with social and anxiety issues as well. The calming effect of being with the non-judgmental, adorable dog, while enhancing the brains motor skills is a winning combination.

So, now there is an actual book/toy series dedicated to this with easy, clear, and concise prose, mixed with adorable descriptive pictures and a matching toy. It adds to the fun and deflates any fear. And this isn’t just for children. We know dogs are family members – and especially popular with seniors who sit with their cherished doggies at night. What a fun, engaging, bonding tool for them and their dog.

We are striving to make a huge difference in play time, happiness, and literacy in this country with ‘Read to Dogs.’
